“Why would you run for SEMA Chairman..? You know that you aren’t going to change anything…”

Yesterday in a conversation with a SEMA member, that’s what I was told… Which was followed closely by, “Why would you want to deal with all of that..” …” followed by a short rant about SEMA politics.

True, SEMA’s not perfect. And if anyone has suggested improving (changing) SEMA’s effectiveness, speed, and transparency, my name would certainly come up.

But what was said to me is missing the ENTIRE POINT. WE ALL HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY to work together to save our industry which is at a pivotal moment. I could care less about the political benefits, risks, or consequences, of running for SEMA Chair.

Am I good with the status quo at SEMA? Heck no. Am I happy about the politics and in some cases, the difficulty of getting things done? Also, no.

We CAN make SEMA better.
We CAN change our industry.
I believe SEMA is best equipped to brighten the future of automotive performance and motorsports.

Could there be some obstacles, absolutely? So we go through them. We fight. There are far too many people who love cars, motorsports, and want to get their hands dirty and help join together to make a difference?

But, I’m running for SEMA Chair because of this photo. Because of a deep, love of the car, and because I believe there is a very real chance that my daughter may never get the opportunity to drive a high-performance vehicle on a public road in 15 years.

If you’ve hesitated to get involved in SEMA because of your concern of having to deal with some politics, or don’t think it’s worth your time, you’re missing a great opportunity to make a difference. I’d love to help you navigate through SEMA – join a network, a council, or start volunteering. If you’ve volunteered in the past, and were frustrated, get over it, grab a shovel, and let’s make a difference. If you’ve never volunteered, let’s get started. Send me a private message. We could use your help.

In any case, SEMA is our best bet. SEMA does a lot of wonderful things. Whether you feel Russell Stephens is a better fit for Chairman, myself, or don’t know either of us, don’t give up on the difference we can make.
